November 29th 2015. My first Ironman. Completed with my husband Ross who was my training partner and coach for four months. Back in July I said, let's go for it and do the last Ironman of the year in Cozumel, Mexico. Which was inspired by Isra Garcia. We had a crazy few months fitting in training around full time work. We lived in a caravan and didn't have much of a social life but loved the variety of training - swimming, cycling and running obviously, and then cross fit for core strength and hot yoga for deep stretching made for an enjoyable training period.
Two weeks before the race my knee started playing up with what a physio later diagnosed as a ITB injury from lack of stretching. It was agony to run more than 6 miles so about 10 days before the race I was advised to run no more, and foam roller the shit out of it along with some specific stretches which I did to loosen up my quads. It all panned out okay in the end and I finished the race.
The biggest take away was the realization that if you apply yourself fully to something for four months (even along side a full time job) then you can still achieve so much in such a short space of time. One of my next big challenges is learn the saxophone.
We have had the month of December off training and have been really just chilling out, I also started a new job at Finisterre redesigning their customer services, we also moved out of the house for a couple of weeks and stayed at a friends in Falmouth which was fun. We both went home for Wales and are just half way through the long New Years weekend planning what's next for 2015.
Exercise is back on the agenda after a month of rest. But it'll be a funner version of exercise - we're going to start dancing lessons, Octopush, Cross Fit and Hot Yoga.
Happy New Year everyone!
